Leech therapy: an ancient tradition

Leech therapy has a history dating back more than 3,500 years. There are records of its use in ancient Egypt, in Indian Ayurvedic medical texts and in Babylonian and Egyptian archaeological sources. Representations have also been found in the Pharaonic tombs of the 18th Dynasty (1567-1308 B.C.), as well as references in the Bible and the Koran.

Medicinal leeches secrete a saliva rich in more than 60 biologically active proteins. Prominent among these is hirudin, one of the most potent natural anticoagulants known.
